Babies and Kids

babies and kidsThe way our children enter the world has a direct effect on their health. In one study over 1500 babies were examined within the first 5 days of birth. This study revealed that at least 90% of the babies involved suffered birth trauma and associated strain in the neck and skull. (Manuelle Medizin, 1987;25:5-10) Another study examined over 1000 infants and concluded approximately 80% of newborns had some form of nerve dysfunction stemming from restricted joint mobility at the base of the skull and the upper vertebrae in the neck. (Journal AOA, 1992;92:729). Some infants spontaneously recover from this trauma and some don’t.

Considering 65% of development of the brain and nervous system occurs in the child’s first year of life I would not want restricted joint mobility in my child’s spine to interfere with the functioning of their nervous system. I believe that for the ideal start in life, babies should be checked as soon as possible after birth to help alleviate health issues that may arise from the birth process. If left unresolved the traumatized joints can interfere with optimal nerve function causing is diminished communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

The irritable baby, one that cries for more than 3 hours in a day, is the most common reason for bringing a baby to a chiropractor. Other reasons for taking your baby to a chiropractor include: if the baby has projectile vomiting; is not breastfeeding equally on both sides: or the child constantly holds it head or neck in a strained position.

As the baby grows it should be checked by a chiropractor if it does not sit up, stand up or walk at the appropriate developmental stages. When the child is old enough to express the experience of motion sickness, nausea, neck or back pain they should be seen by a chiropractor especially if the pain lasts more than a couple of days. It is worth bringing healthy children in periodically as they grow for scoliosis screening and a healthy spine check up. If you benefit from periodic care, there is a good chance that your child has inherited your genetic predisposition and will find relief from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic adjustments for adults are significantly different from those performed on newborns and children. Infant adjustments are very gentle, and typically, a baby will be soothed by these techniques. The average infant with a problem needs only 1 – 3 treatments. These early     consults may prevent a lifetime of recurring problems. As always, chiropractors aim to work with the laws of nature to enhance our quality of life from birth, to childhood, to adulthood and a ripe old age. Don’t let your child suffer needlessly.
